Nabucco

1

As it is known, Nabucco was Giuseppe Verdi’s first major operatic success in Milan. 167 years after the debut one can certainly state that the opera has been a lasting success. Since Verdi still electrifies, the representatives of the consortium at the time decided to name their project of natural gas pipeline Nabucco, after a tuneful evening at the Vienna State Opera.

Together with the new Italilan-Russian competitor project “South Stream“, Nabucco runs the risk of becoming a 7,9 million shelf warmer. If one takes into consideration that the supposedly green politician Joschka Fischer signed a six-digit lobbying contract with OMV and RTW, the whole composition sounds more like an avoidable pop-song for the oligopolistic market than a symphony of thrift and sustainability.

The electricity from solar power will be much cheaper than that from natural gas in the coming years. With all the investment costs one could generate 8.000 megawatt wind power, which is enough to supply all Austrian families. Yet the EU allocates 250 million tax money to this project.

If new Iranian and Iraqi natural gas resource are opened up for Europe, we will finally feel like Guiseppe Verdi did. After he completed Nabucco, Verdi lost his peace for years. A sustainable energy diversification looks different.
